[Marginal Notes]

They are diarists and writers-in-residence, minute-takers and observers. They note, sketch, photograph. They formulate passing thoughts – topical today and perhaps stale tomorrow. They observe themselves and others, negotiate public and private affairs. They chronicle, write stories, and reflect on the world at large. The result, by degrees, is a complex, virtual and highly subjective diary. A notebook and sketchbook for sequels and new beginnings along with casual jottings and left-overs.
This year again, six authors and artists will be keeping a Net diary for steirischer herbst. On the one hand, the two American theatre-makers Kelly Copper and Pavol Liska, who are premièring the sixth episode of their “Life and Times” series at this year’s festival with the Nature Theater of Oklahoma. Also, Thomas Ebermann, former politician and cofounder of the German Green party, today a publicist and satirist will be staging a concert theatre intended to research Herbert Marcuse. Then there is the young Austrian author Laura Freudenthaler, along with Kerstin Putz and Georg Reiter, radio playwrights by trade.
They published their first notes in May, and have been adding to them continuously. When all of the authors are in Graz, each for one week during the festival, their note-taking will be intensified – thus joining together to form a parallel pre-history and literary continuation of steirischer herbst.
